Now that you have dentures to replace your missing teeth, you may be excited about their benefits. You may already start feeling confident in your restored smile, but you should expect minor soreness while you are adjusting to them. They’ll help give you back your bite, but certain foods aren’t very friendly to the prosthetic. Learn what options to avoid and safe ones to stock up on.

Are There Certain Foods I Should Avoid?

In short, there are some items that can spell trouble for the health of your dentures or cause you some discomfort. For instance, tough and chewy meats (such as steak or beef jerky) need to be munched on for much longer than their tender counterparts. As you are working through them, you risk slippage.

Hard fruits, vegetables, and other foods (like raw apples or carrots) need a harder bite to get through them. If you aren’t careful, then they might even be able to cause some damage to the prosthetic itself! Nuts, seeds, and popcorn can also be troublesome as they can get stuck underneath your dentures and lead to irritation.

You should also steer clear of sticky candies, such as taffy or caramel. They can pull on your new teeth and cause them to come out of place.

What Items Are Safe to Eat with Dentures?

You may still find yourself craving the foods above every so often. To help make them easier to eat, you can boil vegetables or blend fruit into smoothies. Cutting tougher items into smaller, manageable pieces can also be helpful!

That being said, there are plenty of other options you can have safely with your dentures. Many soft foods are tasty and can be made into different kinds of meals. By playing around with flavors and spices, you can keep your diet exciting. Here are some tasty choices people love:

  • Rice and pasta
  • Ground meat
  • Soup
  • Yogurt, cottage cheese
  • Porridge and oatmeal
  • Eggs
  • Custard
  • Pudding
  • Ice cream

How Can I Eat More Foods Comfortably?

Over time, you might become curious about how you can have an easier time eating your food. A reliable treatment to help is with dental implants! These posts are fused to your jawbone. Your prosthetic can attach to them instead of sitting on your gums, leading to more stability and no slipping!

However, traditional dentures are still a great option for many people! Remember what you should stock up on to help keep your restored smile the best it can be for as long as possible.
