How to Avoid Dental Emergencies Over the Holidays

Woman brushing her teethThe holiday season is a busy time, but nearly everyone is eager for it to arrive. Whether you’re spending your time preparing gifts for your loved ones, listening to festive music, stringing lights around your home, or breaking out the old family cookbook, you have plenty to look forward too! However, no one wants to be spending their time off getting unexpected dental work. The good news is that a dentist in Ellington is here to help. Continue reading for some tips to keep your smile safe this holiday season.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Practicing thorough and consistent oral hygiene is necessary in order to keep your teeth safe from tooth decay and periodontal disease that could leave you with an emergency dental visit. Remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoridated toothpaste. Floss daily to remove food debris and plaque from hard-to-reach places, like between the teeth and beneath the gumline.

Reduce Your Sugar Intake

When you eat foods that have a high amount of sugar, this sticks to your teeth and bacteria food off of them. A weak acid is produced as a byproduct. This is what is so harmful for your teeth. In order to keep your teeth safe, remember to set a limit for the number of sugary items you eat each day. If chocolate is your guilty pleasure, try picking out one that is darker and contains less sugar than milk chocolate.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is necessary for nearly every single part of your body to function properly. Your mouth is no exception. Water helps with digestion, washes away leftover food particles, and reduces your chances of developing dry mouth. Drinking water can also help to curb your cravings and keep you from overeating throughout the day.

Be Wary of Hard Foods

Even though your enamel is very tough (the strongest substance in your body), it can still become damaged. If you accidently chomp down on something too hard, you could end up with a chipped, cracked, or broken tooth. Remember to be extra cautious when eating hard foods.

See Your Dentist

The holiday season may just be the worst time of year for your smile. That’s why there is no better time to head to your dentist for a regular cleaning and checkup to ensure that your oral health is in good shape.

Don’t let a dental emergency put a damper on your holiday celebrations. By using the tips above, you will be able to start the new year with a strong, healthy smile!
