Thanksgiving is finally here, which means that if you’re a fan of family time, good food, and a day of lounging around and watching football, you’re probably feeling pretty ecstatic! But amidst all your holiday fun, the last thing you should want to happen is for you to develop a cavity—or worse—because of your diet. Keep reading below for some dentist-approved tips that will help you protect your teeth and gums this Thanksgiving, no matter what foods you find on your dinner table!
Tip #1. Limit Your Sugars and Starches
For most of us, Thanksgiving is a holiday about food—you meet with your family and friends, show gratitude for the good things in life, and then proceed to enjoy a copious amount of festive, delicious food! But with that in mind, don’t focus so much on filling your stomach that you’re neglecting your oral health! Certain side dishes that are particularly starchy or sugary, like mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, stuffing, and cranberry sauce can all pose dental issues if eaten in excess! However, items like turkey are great sources of protein, and hearty fruits and vegetables can give your body the nutrients it needs. Just keep a careful eye on everything you’re putting on your plate, opting for healthier choices when possible.
Tip #2. Drink Plenty of Water
Did you know that water is by far and away the best beverage for your oral health? Water doesn’t have any of the sugar content or acidity that many of the drinks enjoyed during the holidays do, such as ciders, eggnogs, hot chocolates, cocktails, mocktails, wine, and more. Better yet, it also encourages your mouth to produce saliva, which assists with digestion and cavity prevention. You should try to drink a glass of water either with your Thanksgiving meal or immediately afterward, to help reduce the amount of food debris that remains in your mouth after eating.
Tip #3. Don’t Overdo Dessert
It’s hard to imagine Thanksgiving without dessert—specifically, pumpkin and pecan pie! During this holiday, there are all sorts of delicious, homemade or storebought desserts lining every kitchen and dining room table, but most of these options aren’t exactly tooth-friendly. That said, you can compromise! Enjoy things in moderation and make smart choices—hold off on that second piece of pie or cake, or opt for a smaller piece or mini-variety. And above all else, no matter what dessert you’re picking, be sure to brush your teeth before going to bed!
