3 Ways to Practice Talking With Dentures

Dentures are a very popular way to replace missing teeth. With these restorations, you can enjoy your full restored smile again! However, one of the challenges they bring is learning how to speak with them. Though this process may be difficult, there are ways you can master this skill in time. Read on to learn three steps that’ll help when talking with dentures and what you can expect.

Step #1: Repeat & Pronounce Your Words

Once you’ve gotten your dentures fitted in your mouth, you’ll want to learn how to speak with them. This can take some time, and it’s natural to find some difficulty in pronouncing certain words or sounds. To begin with, you should practice repeating phrases and elongating words to make yourself more effective at communicating with your dentures. Focus on more troublesome sounds or letters, like ‘S’ or ‘F’, so your mouth grows accustomed to your new teeth.

Step #2: Read to Yourself Out Loud

After getting used to pronunciations, the next step will be to speak words aloud to yourself. Whether you choose to read the newspaper or a book, loudly or softly, the aim is to hear how you sound with your dentures. This can help build your confidence with your restorations. You might also talk to yourself in the mirror or sing in the shower—whichever comes most natural to you!

Step #3: Converse With Others

Now that you’ve grasped how to speak in private, it’s time to speak with other people. Converse with your friends and family first off, as you’ll feel most comfortable talking to them with your dentures on. This is also a major opportunity for them to hear you and provide the feedback you need to perfect your speech. They can recognize which words you might have difficulty with and can help you practice. The more you speak with those close to you, the more you’ll feel like yourself.

Talking with dentures is all about practicing consistently and building your self-esteem in the process. In time, you’ll feel as though you’re speaking with your natural teeth again. And if you have any concerns during the process, you can always speak with your dentist so they can provide the aid you need to make the most of your smile!
