Veneers can completely change the way that you look to others and feel about yourself, so if you accidentally lose a veneer, it’s understandable to panic. Not only does it change how your look, but your teeth probably feel pretty sensitive as well.
Under those circumstances, you may not necessarily know how to deal with the veneer that you’ve lost. Thankfully, there’s no reason to lose your cool. Here’s what you can do about that.
What to Do if Your Veneer Falls Off
If you’ve noticed that your veneer has fallen off, the first thing you should do is try to find it and put it somewhere safe. Depending on the condition of the veneer, it’s possible that your dentist could reattach it.
The next thing you should do is to call your dentist; they’ll be able to talk to you about the options available to you, and they’ll schedule an emergency appointment to help you restore your teeth.
A Word of Warning
It’s worth saying outright that it is a very bad idea to try and reattach your veneer yourself. Any glue that you have at home isn’t strong enough to hold a veneer in place for very long, but it probably could glue your teeth together, or your lips shut. Many of these glues are also toxic, so you really don’t want to put them in your mouth anyway.
How to Stay Comfortable Until Your Appointment
Your veneer ordinarily protects your tooth from sensitivity, so without it, you’re probably feeling pretty uncomfortable. With that in mind, here are a few things you can do before your emergency appointment to protect your teeth.
Over-the-counter pain relievers can be enormously helpful, but you may also want to use something to cover your tooth. Dental wax can be excellent for this purpose; you can find it at any pharmacy, and mushing a bit of it over your tooth can provide a lot of relief.
Finally, you can just be careful about what you eat and drink by avoiding anything too hot or too cold. Keep these tips in mind, and you should be able to get your smile back in perfect shape before you know it!
