What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is custom-designed to fit over a patient’s tooth. Its job is to protect the teeth against harm and allow it to continue functioning, even if it has suffered significant damage. Traditionally, creating a custom dental crown requires at least two dental appointments and the involvement of a third-party laboratory. However, CEREC technology is changing that.

CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. That sounds like a mouthful, but the basic concept is easy to understand. Basically, it involves the use of CAD/CAM technology that allows us to design and fabricate top-quality crowns right here in our office. This can greatly speed up the treatment process and possibly even spare you from having to make multiple trips to see us.

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

Here is a basic overview of the CEREC process:

  • We numb the tooth and prepare it by removing a bit of its enamel so it will fit well beneath its restoration.
  • We use a digital scanner to capture a three-dimensional impression of your mouth.
  • Your dentist uses advanced software to design your crown.
  • An in-house ceramic milling unit carves the crown out of top-quality dental ceramic.
  • We put the finishing touches on the crown, ensure that it meets our strict quality standards, and attach it to your tooth.

From beginning to end, the CEREC process usually takes just a few hours.

Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

Some outstanding benefits of CEREC crowns include:

  • Save time. You will probably not need to make multiple trips to our office.
  • No temporary crown. The traditional crown process requires patients to wear a temporary crown between visits, which can be inconvenient. CEREC technology eliminates the need for temporary restorations.
  • Digital impressions. The digital scanning process is fast and easy. No uncomfortable trays or off-putting putty materials are necessary.
  • CEREC crowns are made of top-quality ceramic that looks natural in the mouth.
  • Same-day restorations are just as durable as their traditionally manufactured counterparts.
  • The cost of CEREC crowns is often comparable to that of restorations made via traditional methods.
